God is a master architect. I was blown away recently on a trip to Ireland and England at the beauty of all that was around me. On the northern Ireland coast we experienced the “Giant’s Causeway”, a geological wonder steeped in legend and folklore. 40,000 interlocking basalt columns are a wonder to witness with one’s eyes. In England we took a hike, a little longer and more beautiful than expected, in the Malvern mountains and finally hiked our way up to the British camp. A 360 degree view encompassed rolling green hills for miles and miles. We were again blown away at the wonder and craftsmanship of our great great God.
People have asked me about my trip… and the word that comes to mind is simply: Beyond! In our journeys we saw sites and walked places that God had been actively at work in minds and in the beauty of the surroundings. People were awakened by His presence — including the authors we were studying: C.S. Lewis and J.R.R.Tolkien. They experienced the wonder and awe of God in creation and their imaginations have blessed millions with their creative writings.
When Donald Whittle, the son of a Methodist minister, met C.S. Lewis for the first time he said, “I began to realize that my picture of the world would need to be adjusted.” We were created by a big, big God that is so beyond, so creative, so authentically approachable. And when we get glimpses of God’s bigness and “beyondness” it is a great joy.
The first half of Psalm 19 says it well…
“The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
The skies display his craftsmanship.
Day after day they continue to speak;
night after night they make him known.
They speak without a sound or word;
their voice is never heard.
Yet their message has gone throughout
the earth, and their words to all the world.
God has made a home in the heavens for the sun.
It bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom
after his wedding.
It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race.
The sun rises at one end of the heavens
and follows its course to the other end.
Nothing can hide from its heat.
May God bless you as you experience his greatness in big and small ways every day.
