Let Me Serve You
As I look back on the past nine months, the word serve comes to mind. The spiritual disciplines that we have taken the time to learn about, rest and reflect upon, and pray and wait for are in preparation to serve others in the name of Jesus. I love the phrase “the hands and feet of Jesus.” It is a simple way to think about how to live out our Christian faith and ideals.
I visit my sister Janet each week at her group home and we have devotions together. I read the devotion of the day and the scripture passage that goes with the message. A couple of weeks ago the scripture was I Peter 4:10; “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” We talk about what the scripture means and Janet asks me any questions she may have. This day I asked if she knows how she serves others. She was befuddled by this question. Janet cannot walk and has limited use of her hands so she does not serve in the most obvious of ways. I relayed to her that often people have come up to me and expressed how they have been so blessed by her smile and her good nature. That her cheerful and pleasant disposition is her way of serving others in Jesus name.
She has much she could complain about but doesn’t. She is blessed by people taking a moment to stop and greet her and returns the blessing ten-fold. She is a continuous reminder of God’s grace and blessing in my life that I need to remember to pass on. How will you be the “Hands and Feet of Jesus today?”
