Cookies with Stacey
“You are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for you to do.” Ephesians 2:10
Four families from Hope traveled to Yankton last weekend, flexible and willing to serve in any way God directed us. Each day our families would separate and go to different places to help people in Yankton. There was a wide variety of things to do: Walking folks at nursing homes, painting fences, fixing porches, working on a farm and more.
One afternoon following our service projects a smiley Stacey Gibbs said to me, “Guess how I got to serve today?” I started thinking. She said, “Heidi, you better get this the first guess.” I thought for a minute. What does Stacey love to do? Show hospitality…listen to people…I got it! I said, “Bake Cookies?!” YES! Stacey got to bake cookies to bless others.
God is so fantastic. He gives us gifts, passions and talents that we delight in and he finds ways for us to be ourselves, pouring out and sharing who we are with others.
I was so delighted to think about God’s invitations to us to serve others this weekend. Sometimes we do things that stretch us and are out of our comfort zone. This is good! And sometimes we do the very thing we are wired for, comfortable with and eager to do! There was a lot of that going on in Yankton, people just being who they are. The more I got to know these wonderful families, the more I could celebrate how they are “God’s workmanship, created to do good works…”
How fun for Jesus to invite me to line-dance with senior citizens, and have Jessica (my animal-rescuing-daughter) remove ticks from the farm cats, and ask Steve Hong to fix someone’s website. And how sweet that Jesus would invite Stacey to bake cookies! God loves who we are, we are His workmanship!
